During a joint training camp session with the New York Jets in August, Gage sustained a season-ending knee injury. “He must be going off preseason stuff that the media was talking about,” Mayfield said. “I’m thrilled to see him because he wasn’t present at our first game. He’s an extremely good player, in my opinion. He has for some time now. He has had a significant influence on every squad he has played with. However, he needs to watch a few more movies.”
The Bucs and Lions faced off earlier in the season, with Detroit emerging victorious 20–6 at Tampa Bay in Week 6, as Mayfield hinted at.
