Baker Mayfield, the quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, responded bluntly to recent comments made about the Bucs’ offense by Detroit Lions defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. Gardner-Johnson said he had never faced a better receiving corps than Tampa Bay’s. However, he also mocked Mayfield by saying to reporters, “If you give that Tampa group a good quarterback, that’s a good group.” When pressed for an answer at his Wednesday media conference, Mayfield emphasized that he’s also skilled at trash talk.

Mayfield remarked of Gardner-Johnson, “I don’t think he’s really watched film because he mentioned Russell Gage.” “You know, we love Russell but Russell hasn’t played a snap all year for us.”

During a joint training camp session with the New York Jets in August, Gage sustained a season-ending knee injury. “He must be going off preseason stuff that the media was talking about,” Mayfield said. “I’m thrilled to see him because he wasn’t present at our first game. He’s an extremely good player, in my opinion. He has for some time now. He has had a significant influence on every squad he has played with. However, he needs to watch a few more movies.”

The Bucs and Lions faced off earlier in the season, with Detroit emerging victorious 20–6 at Tampa Bay in Week 6, as Mayfield hinted at. With Gardner-Johnson sidelined due to a torn pectoral muscle, the quarterback completed 206 passes for 206 yards and one interception. In Detroit on Sunday, during their divisional playoff encounter, one of them ought to have the final say.
