This season, the Detroit Lions have been exceptional performers. They have finally won the NFC North for the first time in 30 years. Of course, they have loftier goals than a division win, but if they want to maintain their NFL domination, they must continue to improve in the summer.

Defense is an area where the Lions could improve. While they have been one of the top offensive teams this season, their defense has been ordinary at best. According to FOX Sports, they rank 15th in total defense.

Having said that, concentrating on defense should be their main emphasis when the offseason arrives. Fortunately for the Lions, an incoming free agency, Washington Commanders cornerback Kendall Fuller, is a good target for them.
The suggestion was made by Bleacher Report in their latest free agency piece, which listed all of the prospective 2024 targets for all NFL teams. Because of his consistency and adaptability, Fuller was mentioned as a perfect prospect for the Lions.
With both cornerbacks Emmanuel Moseley and Jerry Jacobs poised to become free agents, the Lions are in desperate need of prospective replacements.

“Fuller has been Washington’s top corner for a few years now and has performed admirably over the last three seasons.” “In 2023, he has earned good grades from Pro Football Focus as a run defender and in coverage, making him a good potential addition to the Lions’ secondary,” the Bleacher Report article explained.

“Plus, the eight-year pro has gone only to the playoffs three times in his career, so he might be willing to take a cheaper deal to play for a Super Bowl contender.”

Why Should the Detroit Lions Be Interested in Washington Commanders Cornerback Kendall Fuller?

Kendall Fuller is one of the top cornerbacks on the open market this offseason, and for good reason. In his 15 games thus far, he has two interceptions, nine passes defended, and two fumble recoveries. In addition, he has 79 combined tackles and two tackles for loss.

He is the third-best cornerback available, according to PFF. In free agency, he is expected to sign a three-year, $40 million contract.

With a well-established offense headed by Jared Goff, stronger defense and cornerback performance could be the missing ingredient for the Lions to become postseason regulars and, potentially, Super Bowl candidates.

It remains to be seen what the Lions will do, but they must be active to avoid falling behind when their rivals all try to bolster their respective lineups.
